Overall not that bad of a movie, even with the gross inaccuracies that come with the portrayal of storm chasing in it. I always enjoy watching Twister when it’s on because its just a simple summer blockbuster with some cool special effects. As other people have pointed out, the science is a good ways off, but unless you’re a meteorologist or weather enthusiast it shouldn’t be particularly bothersome. As a chaser, I’m able to enjoy this movie because it does get the feeling of a chase almost dead on. The excitement on a day before the first storms go up is caught pretty well.
Now to the science part, while Twister has many flaws (the preliminary ratings before the tornado has even dissipated to name one) some of the issues listed below are totally false. Violent tornadoes can and do happen at night. Boundary layer cooling does not mean violent tornadoes cannot occur at night (a la Greensburg, Kansas EF5 in 2007 or the Super Tuesday Outbreak in 2008. I had seen this film once or twice, it was the second highest grossing movie of 1996 (after Independence Day) it was turned into a theme park attraction at Universal Studios, Florida, and it was the first movie to be released on DVD, I knew I had to see it again to get a better opinion, from director Jan de Bont (Speed, The Haunting. Basically when she was a child, Dr. Joanne ‘Jo’ Thornton (Helen Hunt) in 1969 she suffered the death of her father, when he was pulled away by a powerful tornado, now in 1996 she is a meteorologist, specifically she is a tornado-hunter. She is reunited with her estranged husband, Bill “The Extreme” Harding (Bill Paxton) former weather researcher and storm chaser, now a weather reporter, he is now in a relationship with, and planning to marry, reproductive therapist Melissa Reeves (Jami Gertz) they need Jo’s signature to finalise a divorce. Jo has built four identical tornado research devices called DOROTHY (after The Wizard of Oz character) based on Bill’s designs, it is designed to release hundreds of sensors into the centre of a tornado to study its structure from the inside, the results will develop a more advanced storm warning system. Bill and Jo join forces, during an active bout of stormy weather, with their team of storm chasers, to follow a number of tornadoes to release these sensors and capture the data. The only problem is, Bill’s rival, smug, corporate-funded meteorologist and storm chaser Dr. Jonas Miller (Cary Elwes) is also on the hunt for tornadoes, and he has created an identical device, DOT-3, he wants the credit. They continue to chase the many tornadoes that form, they are getting bigger and stronger, and in the process Bill and Jo find themselves rekindling their feelings, this leads to Melissa peacefully breaking off the engagement. After many failed attempts to release the sensors, and Miller getting too close to the storm, killing himself and his crew, Jo and Bill finally get lucky, the most powerful tornado forms, DOROTHY is activated and the team successful capture the data on their computer. Jo and Bill are still caught in the storm, they anchor themselves to some pump plumbing in a shed, they end up in the vortex of the super-massive funnel, until the storm finally dissipates, they rekindle their marriage and the team celebrate their accomplishment. Also starring Philip Seymour Hoffman as Dustin Davis, Ferris Buller’s Day Off star Alan Ruck as Robert ‘Rabbit’ Nurick, Lois Smith as Aunt Meg Greene, Wendle Josepher as Haynes and Lost’s Jeremy Davies as Laurence. Paxton and Hunt are okay, I agree there is a lack of chemistry between them, the other cast members are reasonable as well, to be honest the only reason to watch this film is because of the ferocious cyclones ripping through the houses and farm buildings, and sending cars, trucks and cows flying, the special effects to create the spiralling destruction is fine, it is a very average watch, but an alright action adventure. It was nominated the Oscars for Best Visual Effects and Best Sound, and it won the BAFTA for Best Special Visual Effects. Worth watching.
